Elect the AG

I almost hate to admit it when Bob Jones is right because I disagree with him so often, but he is 100 percent right on when he calls for an elected state Attorney General. I’ll bet that would lead to a cleaner state government. If it’s good enough for 43 other states, why not Hawaii?

Very neighborly

Thank you to Don Chapman for the cover story “Lady of the Lanterns,” his wonderful and insightful story about Her Holiness Shinso Ito, and his delicate unfolding of the heartwarming and private mystery of this very human public figure.

I really enjoyed this edition of MidWeek – it’s like spending time with neighbors!

Kindness, peace

I am not a Buddhist, but after reading Don Chapman’s story on the Dalai Lama last year and on Her Holiness Shinso Ito last week, the little I understand about the philosophy is making sense to me. She says being kind to people around you can lead to world peace. I’m all for it, and hope it really is that simple.

Enjoy your mom

I just wanted to say how much I appreciated Ron Nagasawa’s column “Nailed It” about his mother. It was “nailed” in more than one way. Since losing my mother on May 25, 2008, after being her primary caregiver for more than seven years prior while juggling my business and family, today I tell everyone I know to appreciate the time they spend with their mom, because when she’s gone, you wish for all the sleepless nights just to have her back again.

At 6-foot-2 and 300 pounds, I will always be my “mommy’s boy.” My dad used to say that if you want to see what your wife will turn out to be, just look at her mom. Well, I believe differently. I believe you can tell the character of a person by how they take care of their mother. I’m planning to light a lantern for my mother on Memorial Day, and I will let her know how much I love her, miss her and look forward to the day that I see her again.

Leopold laugher

The last place I expected news of former state senator John Leopold was in Chuck Shepherd’s Weird News column. But there he was. Then again, after reading the news item about Leopold’s behavior in jail, Weird News is perfect!
