Lanikai Luau Marks 50 Years

Lanikai Elementary Public Charter School turns 50 this year and will celebrate with a luau from 5 to 9 p.m. May 2 at the school.

“E Ho’olaule’a Lanikai” is a party to highlight school accomplishments, its dedicated staff, loyal parents and supportive Kailua community. All alumni and the public are invited to attend the golden anniversary feast and festivities, which include a time capsule, oral histories, and tributes to its history and achievements, such as a nationally recognized student-produced environmental video.

Entertaining guests will be Paula Fuga, Dread Ashanti and Keauhou, with special guest Rebecca Lilinoe Sterling (Miss Aloha Hula 2012).

The traditional Hawaiian dinner will be served buffet style. Tickets cost $20 for adults and $12 for children 12 and under, and they are on sale now at lanikaischool.com/50. For details, call 266-7844.

As a pioneering charter school, Lanikai’s students also tested in the top 10 percent of state schools for reading and math, according to PCNC Espie Chapman, noting that it also has served as a feeder campus for private schools.

Besides the academic credentials, Chapman stated, “We pride ourselves with volunteerism, community in the classrooms celebrating the whole child, and the spirit of giving.”
