Japan Handbell Choir Returns

Hakuoh University Handbell Choir returns for its 24th Goodwill Tour of Hawaii, and it will perform at 10 a.m. Feb. 18 in Leeward Community College Theatre.

The free concert will consist of classical selections, like Pachelbel’s Canon in D, and popular hits like Let It Go from the Disney film Frozen, as well as favorite island music like Hawaii Aloha.

Directed by Hirotaka Arai, the 13-member ensemble plays silver handbells, which have a range of seven octaves.

Some of the bells are easily rung by hand, while others weigh more than 15 pounds and are struck with a mallet.

Other public performances by the choir will be held Friday at Central Union Church, Saturday at Ala Moana Center and Feb. 17 at Windward Community College.

Two years ago, Hakuoh University renewed its international cooperative agreement with UH community colleges, which includes a student exchange program and this concert tour. For more information, call 956-0321.
