Introducing Hawaii’s New First Lady

Inauguration Ceremony: Gov. David Ige was sworn into office Dec. 1 at the State Capitol. In his inaugural address, the governor began by acknowledging and thanking wife Dawn, who he says “has been with me every day during the past 29 years, has been my greatest supporter, a trusted adviser for the most difficult decisions, and has encouraged me to continue through the toughest times, and picked me up after every disaster. She has sacrificed many personal opportunities to support me and our family.” On this special day, the first lady wore a red suit from Ann Taylor. “I love Ann Taylor,” she says. “I like tailored outfits that fit well. Also, red is my favorite color. I wear red often. I’m also a bargain shopper. I bought this for 50 percent off on Black Friday.”

How long does it take you to get ready for work? About 45 minutes. I often can’t decide what to wear.

How would you describe your day-to-day style? My style is classic business, and I do enjoy wearing shoes with heels.

Fitness routine: I run in the mornings at Magic Island in Ala Moana. Watching the sun rise over Diamond Head reminds me how lucky I am to live in Hawaii.

How did you and the governor meet? We met at University of Hawaii. We were both candidates for student government positions in the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii (ASUH). Fortunately, we both won our seats.

Do you have a say in what the governor wears? Yes, I do give him suggestions. I like bold colors for his aloha shirts.

What is your New Year’s tradition? Our family enjoys ozoni or mochi soup. The soup recipe has been passed down from my grandmother in Ewa. It’s what our family looks forward to each New Year.

What is your New Year’s resolution? To look for ways to support and strengthen our education system so our students can continue to be successful.
