Hui Makaala Fashion Show
The Hui Makaala 45th annual scholarship fund luncheon and fashion show takes place Oct. 19 in Pomaikai Ballrooms at Dole Cannery, featuring the latest fashions from Calista by Cotton Cargo, Nui Mono and Rix Island Wear.

Located in Kahala Mall and downtown (76 N. King St.), Calista celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. The boutique carries women’s fashions and accessories for every occasion, from casual to formal, including for proms, weddings and everyday wear. Owner Gilda Minassian brings in merchandise that is described as not just beautiful, but also eclectic, hip, classy and even sassy.
Since its opening in 1979 by Elaine Costello and daughter Lue Zimmelman, Nui Mono has become a local landmark in Moiliili (at 2745 S. King St.), offering unique, handcrafted clothing, accessories and gifts from around the world, as well as its original Nui Mono fashions made with cotton and silk kimono, and other ethnic fabrics.
Costello died in 2012, but Nui Mono continues to grow with Zimmelman and the added talents of local designers Lisa Wiemken, Kim Kono, Wendy Kim Messier and Sherrie Rupert.
Rix Island Wear is known for its fresh designs in Hawaiian aloha shirts, which are all designed and sewn in Hawaii. Founded by Rick Ralston, creator of the famous Crazy Shirts brand, Rix features prints that are bold in design, subtle in color and easy to coordinate. A great one-stop shop for men, it also carries women’s clothing.
Hui Makaala is a nonprofit organization founded in 1946 to promote an understanding and appreciation of Okinawan culture and history in Hawaii. Proceeds from the fashion show luncheon go to Hui Makaala Scholarship Fund. Last year, the organization awarded $18,000 among 11 local high school graduates to further their education.
