The Internship

MOVIE REVIEW with Jose Figueras

What is your official title/occupation? Stand-up comedian and radio advertising sales for Ohana Broadcast Company.

Where and with whom did you see the movie? Consolidated Pearlridge Theater with my girlfriend/handler, Kelly Tatom.

Overall, what did you think? When I first saw that this movie stars Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, I initially thought this was going to be a sequel, if not a similar story to Wedding Crashers. I was pleasantly surprised at how different it was. Instead, The Internship is a great story about a couple of “old dog” salesmen who decide to take a scary leap of faith and become interns at Google. While they struggle as the older guys in an ever-changing youthful world of high technology, they are able to share their life wisdom with the younger generation. It was a realistic portrayal of how we can all get caught up in work and technology, that sometimes we forget that we need real human interaction.

Without giving away the ending, what was one of your favorite scenes? Each team of interns was given a task to complete and, in classic Vince Vaughn style, he wrangles his team together for an epic, unforgettable and very inspirational night on the town.

On a scale of one to four stars, what would you rate this film? ★★★1/2.

What did you think of the cinematography? The cinematography was really great. The scenery of the Bay Area was the perfect backdrop, and the colorfulness of the Google office makes you want to take a family vacation there.

Did you identify with any of the characters? I think I identify most with Vince Vaughn, because I feel like sometimes I can be a leader, and I like helping to bring a team together.

Did the soundtrack contribute significantly to the film? Yes – Alanis Morrisette’s song at the beginning set the tone.

Would you buy this movie when it comes out on DVD? Absolutely.

What’s your favorite movie snack? Unfortunately, for some odd reason the theaters won’t allow me to bring in my grill to barbecue ribs, so I’ll usually end up eating buttered popcorn with mochi crunch and Reese’s Pieces … Yes, all three in my mouth at one time – delicious washed down with a Coke or root beer.

On a different note, what’s new with you? Jose Dynamite and Friends Comedy Show, Friday nights (except First Fridays) at 7:30 p.m. inside the Celtic Room at O’Toole’s Irish Pub on Nuuanu Avenue. I recently returned from the Big Island after headlining two sold-out shows in Hilo and Hawi.
