This week in 1964: A film of The Beatles‘ first U.S. concert on Feb. 11, 1964, at the Washington Coliseum in Washington, D.C., is shown at Waikiki Shell for a sold-out crowd of more than 8,000 fans. The Beatles’ performance includes From Me To You, I Saw Her Standing There, All My Loving, Please, Please Me, She Loves You, Twist And Shout and I Want To Hold Your Hand. During the first half of the evening, film footage of The Beach Boys and Lesley Gore in concert is shown, although they were not on the same show as The Beatles. Tickets cost $2. Fun fact: A couple of days earlier, Ringo Starr arrives at the Honolulu Airport on a stopover on his way to Australia to join the rest of The Beatles on their concert tour. I chat with Ringo and Beatles manager Brian Epstein as we walk around the customs area that separated us, by fencing of light Plexiglas, from hundreds of screaming fans.
