WE’VE LOST ONE of the original “Poi Boys,” Tom Rounds, who passed away last week in Los Angeles. Known as “TR,” Tom set a world record during our K-POI “Wake-A-Thon” — staying awake for 203 hours, 44 minutes and 40 seconds in the window of the Wigwam store on Dillingham Boulevard. We did lots of crazy promotions in those early days of rock ‘n’ roll radio, including DJ races on bicycles and mules … And I remember well when the two of us raced motorboats around Honolulu Harbor. But one of our favorites was setting yet another world record in the “Bowl-A-Thon,” bowling for three straight days, with that Tom at Waikiki Bowl and this Tom at Pali Lanes.
