This week in 1997: Gloria Estefan performs before a crowd of about 30,000 fans at Aloha Stadium, the last stop on her “Evolution Tour 97.” Gloria is lowered to the Aloha Stadium stage from a shiny metallic sphere. Backed by a 16-piece band, she keeps the crowd entertained for twoand-a-half hours with a mix of infectious dance hits and sweet ballads. She opens with an uptempo one-two-three punch: Conga, Live For Loving You and Get On Your Feet.

Other highlights include Rhythm Is Gonna Get You, Turn The Beat Around, Anything For You and Don’t Want To Lose You. The final song of the encore is Reach, the theme song for the 1996 Summer Olympics. Tickets cost $65, $45, $35 and $20. Fun fact: To arrange her appearance here, I traveled to Puerto Rico, where Gloria was presenting a concert, to meet with Gloria and her agent Jorge Pinos. I really enjoyed her performance, but missed out on her patter between songs as she spoke to the capacity crowd only in Spanish! … And the No. 1 hit on Billboard is Hypnotize by The Notorious B.I.G.
