THIS WEEK IN 1961: Hawaii’s top DJs, better known as The Poi Boys, celebrate K-POI’s second anniversary as the No. 1 radio station in Hawaii! We throw a party that includes a 343-pound cake measuring 16-feet wide by 5-feet high. Baked by Leonard’s Bakery, it was decorated with models of the seven Poi Boys: Ron Jacobs, Bob “The Beard” Lowrie, Tom Rounds, Fred Kiemel, Dave “The Moose” Donnelly, Bob Prescott and yers truly. Leonard Rego and his staff deliver the cake in sections, which they carefully assemble in the station’s parking lot at 1701 Ala Wai Blvd. What a blast … about 5,000 listeners come by and help celebrate …

AND THE NO. 1 record is Travelin’ Man by Ricky Nelson

A Poi Boy on the Radio! Listen to Uncle Tom every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon on Hawaii’s Kool Gold 107.9!
