This week in 1988: Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach perform before 1,000 black-tie VIP guests at the grand opening of Hyatt Regency Waikoloa on the Big Island. In a powerful 90-minute concert held in the hotel’s Grand Ballroom, Dionne, along with Burt and a 30-piece orchestra, run through a bevy of hits including Walk On By, Alfie, Don’t Make Me Over, I Say A Little Prayer, I’ll Never Fall In Love Again, Promises, Promises and Do You Know The Way To San Jose. At one point during the show, Burt announces, “Nobody sings my songs like this lady!”

Fun Facts: Don Chapman reports in the Honolulu Advertiser that hotel magnate Chris Hemmeter spent a million dollars on this grand opening event … and Dave Donnelly notes in the Star Bulletin that “Parking was a problem – not at the hotel, but at Keahole Airport where private jets were wing tip-to-wing tip.”
