Hawaii’s Kings of Spade are back on tour on the Mainland, performing at venues from Austin to Los Angeles, and rockin’ everybody with their latest release. Jesse Savio dropped us a line about finding Riki Rachtman, former host of MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball - the definitive rock show of the ’80s and ’90s – in their SXSW Austin audience. Rachtman, highly influential in the American rock scene, waxed enthusiastic on Twitter about lead singer Kasi Nunes‘ pink mohawk and vocals “that made me stop in my tracks,” then took to Facebook with, “Thanks for the CD. I’ve only played it 2 maybe 3 … dozen times so far”…

This week in 1974: Steely Dan makes its Hawaii debut before a sell-out crowd at HIC Arena. They begin with Bodhisattva and continue with Do It Again, Reeling in the Years, My Old School and their current hit Rikki Don’t Lose That Number. Fun fact: Michael McDonald is playing keyboards in the Steely Dan band. The opening act is Jesse Colin Young. At the end of Jesse’s set, I notice audience members waving lit matches and lighters to show their appreciation for a great performance … a first in the arena! Tickets: $6.50, $5.50 and $4.50 … And the No. 1 record in Hawaii is Sunshine On My Shoulders by John Denver
