Film On Fire Ants Friday In Kahaluu

Oahu Invasive Species Committee will present the documentary Little Fire Ants in Hawaii at 7 p.m. Friday at KEY Project pavilion in partnership with KEY and its Waihee Ahupua’a Initiative — an educational conservation project planned for the mauka valley.

The 28-minute film, produced by Maui Invasive Species Committee, examines the biology, impacts and potential solutions to the spread of the devastating pest.

The insect’s impact on Oahu already is being felt in Waimanalo and Mililani Mauka, where hundreds of alarmed residents attended an information meeting July 14 to learn more about a simmering invasion that’s spread to at least eight homes and a nearby gulch over a four-year period.

The Kahaluu screening will be followed by updates and a question-and-answer session. Potluck and calabash donations are planned. Call OISC at 266-7994 or email jreppun@keyproject.org. KEY is at 45-200 Waihee Road.
