HECO Helping Protect History

A recent donation from Hawaiian Electric Company Inc. to Historic Hawaii Foundation will support the organization’s commitment to preserving historic places in Hawaii.

The donation, which totaled $10,000, represents the West Oahu-based utility’s support of local nonprofits.

“Through the organization, we are able to positively affect many communities large and small across the Islands,” said senior communications consultant Sharon Higa.

According to HECO, close to 700 sites and buildings are listed on the Hawaii Register of Historic Places, and more than 300 properties are on the National Register of Historic Places.

“The perpetuity of these treasures ensures that the culture, arts and artifacts of Hawaii remain for generations to both learn from and appreciate, as they portray the living history of Hawaii,” said Higa.

“Hawaii has an impressive list of historic sites and buildings that the Historic Hawaii Foundation has made available to the public on their website, and it is a terrific resource for those interested to know about our rich history and diverse cultures.”

The foundation was established in 1974 and now has more than 800 members that support its funding.
