Mililani Counting On Talented Senior

With four starters having completed their eligibility from last season, the Mililani girls basketball team finds itself in regroup mode as it officially begins preseason camp this week.

For Trojan senior Zyriana Davies, that means seeing her role expand.

“She’s ready for a breakout year,” said head coach Patrick Basilio, who led the Trojans to a 13-3 mark last season and a Division I state tournament appearance.

Davies recently took some time away to visit with MidWeek‘s Central Oahu Islander.

What is your earliest sports memory? When I was in fifth grade, I began running track and playing basketball at Keoneula Elementary (in Ewa Beach). It was kind of scary at first. I had a really hard time. I didn’t know the people, and I didn’t know the concepts of basketball.

Who has had the biggest impact on your life? My mom (Justine). She’s been there for me since I started playing sports. She ran track and played basketball, and she tried to teach me stuff that she knew.

What area of your game did you focus on the most this off-season? My post moves. That’s something my coach always told me I needed to work on, and that I needed to be more aggressive.

When did you know basketball was THE sport for you? My freshman year was when I decided I wanted to continue playing and, hopefully, get a scholarship. I’ve gotten more serious about it my senior year.

Which teammate plays the toughest defense at practice? Mikaela Limper. Although she’s tiny, she really plays aggressive defense against the opposing team. And she has a high basketball IQ.

What website do you go to the most? Google. I use it for my homework and for looking up schools (potential colleges).

What film could you watch over and over? Love and Basketball. I love that movie – and Coach Carter.

What item could you not live without? My phone because I can look up my homework online. Our teachers sometimes allow us to use our phone to look up information.

Who are three of your favorite musical artists? Trey Songz. I really like Keri Hilson and also Chris Brown.

How do you like to spend your free time? I like working out, and I like reading.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Hopefully, as a pharmacist. My mom is in the medical field. She is the one who inspired me.

What is your dream destination? Jamaica. Everyone says it’s really pretty.

You’re stuck on Kahoolawe and can have only one food. What would it be? Spaghetti. I could eat spaghetti every day.

What celebrity would you most like to meet? (Gospel singer) Donnie McClurkin.
