‘Horror’ Predicted For Kaimuki Stage

Aliens are coming to town Feb. 21-March 9, live on stage, as Kaimuki High School Performing Arts Center presents its spring musical, The Rocky Horror Show. (A sneak peek is at 5 p.m. Saturday at Kahala Mall.)

Considered a cult classic since its 1973 London premiere, Richard O’Brien’s play is a humorous tribute to science fiction B movies of the 1950s. A young couple seeks shelter from a storm in the castle of a madman with Rocky, his newest creation.

Moved to allay concerns by some over the play’s content, director Jen Thomas said they are sticking to the original script, and not venturing into the extremes of the equally popular Rocky Horror film. The cast is comprised of youths in grades 7-12 from all over Oahu, after all.

“We are working toward something much more innocent,” Thomas stated. “It is told as a fun, silly story of newly engaged adults who encounter a mad-scientist alien.”

Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21 and 22, March 1, 7 and 8; and 3 p.m. Feb. 23, and March 2 and 9. Tickets cost $12 and $6, and are on sale at Harry’s Music Store or online at honoluluboxoffice.com, or call 733-4913.
