Library Comes Alive With Fairies, Howls, Ronald, ‘Hunger’ Film

There’s more to do at Hawaii Kai Library than borrow books this summer. A series of free summer shows and activities await interested keiki and parents. All events begin at 10:30 a.m. except the June 18 film. (For programs at other area libraries, see Highlights on Page 7.)

June 5 — Fairy Grandmother Susie Roth arrives with stories told through magic, science and fun.

June 18 — A free screening of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is set for 2:30 p.m. in the first-floor meeting room. The sequel to the 2012 film, based on the dystopian young adult series by Suzanne Collins, focuses on Katniss and Peeta as they get swept up in a rebellion after their victory in the eponymous to-the-death competition. The PG-13 movie runs for 146 minutes. Seating is first-come, first-served. Snacks will be provided, but attendees should bring a jacket or sweater because the room gets cold.

June 19 — Ronald McDonald will entertain with interactive stories, music, magic and games.

June 25 — “Experience Hardware Science” will share tips on using simple tools from hardware and craft stores to learn all about STEM for ages 8 and older; also at Aina Haina at 1 p.m. and Kaimuki at 3:30 p.m.

July 3 — A sing-along concert with Uncle Wayne Watkins and his Howling Dog Band brings feel-good music with positive messages. The one-hour show is open to all ages.

July 12 — All things bubbly take the stage in an interactive bubble program featuring the square bubble, bouncy bubble and humansized bubble. The all-ages program will run for 40 minutes.
