CU Forum To Help Fight The Hackers

Chaminade University expects a full house next week at its public CyBiz forum, following local and national security breaches. Designed to equip businesses with protective tools, it runs from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 13 in Mamiya Theatre.

Speakers are professional computer hacker Johnny Long and retired federal instructor and “cybercop” Kevin Manson. They will share ways that hackers work and what can be done to stop them.

“Successful break-ins are still done with old-school tactics like dumpster diving, as well as high tech methods,” cautioned professor Ed Teixeira, who heads CU’s Homeland Security Leadership Development track. “There are simple, proactive steps everyone can take to reduce their vulnerability.”

Professor Ronald Becker of CU’s Criminal Justice masters program noted, “We want to bring together business, local law enforcement and homeland security so we can raise the level of information security throughout our state.” Topics include computer and network intrusions, identity theft, fraud, cyber threats and scams, smishing and vishing, social networking sites, and security for desktop and mobile devices.
