Bumatai Will Lead Cycle Race To Benson Center

The family of Bobby Benson, a drug-troubled Oahu teen who took his life in 1984, will host a motorcycle ride Saturday to benefit Bobby Benson Center’s scholarship fund.

Proceeds will enable more youths to join the accredited addiction treatment programs at BBC, a Kahuku-based facility and the only residential substance abuse treatment center in Hawaii for adolescents – providing treatment that wasn’t available to Benson three decades ago.

“The goal of the center is to return teens to their schools and communities with the skills to remain drug- and alcohol-free and to mature successfully in today’s world,” stated Benson’s father David, a retired HPD major who founded the center. “We are excited about this fundraiser and appreciate the support of the motorcycle enthusiasts and the general public.”

Local entertainer Andy Bumatai will host the ride, which starts at 10:30 a.m. at Montgomery Powersports on Nimitz Highway and finishes at BBC, 56-660 Kamehameha Hwy. Kailua Bay Buddies and Taimane entertain at noon following the ride. Also planned are prizes and food for purchase. Concert admission is $20, and entry wristbands will be available before the ride and at BBC.
