Overall, what did you think?

I really enjoyed this movie. Chadwick Boseman’s portrayal of James Brown from his mid-teens to his 60s was very impressive. The chronicle of Brown’s rise from extreme poverty to becoming one of the most influential musicians in history is riveting.

Without giving away the ending, what was one of your favorite scenes?

Every scene that included a James Brown performance with his signature dance moves was my favorite. They were so entertaining and fun to watch.

On a scale of one to four stars, what would you rate this film?

★★★★.

What did you think of the cinematography?

The cinematography was excellent and the attention to detail was evident when showcasing the early years of James Brown.

The Godfather of Soul comes alive onscreen, with his struggles and accomplishments clearly connecting to the audience with moments of joy and feelings of sadness. His journey in life through the years was clearly depicted.

Was the message/theme clear?

Yes, it is amazing that James Brown was able to achieve incredible success after enduring such a traumatizing childhood. Life’s ups and downs took a toll on him throughout the years, and there is a strong message for everyone (especially people in the entertainment business) to not make the same mistakes he made.

Did it remind you of any other works of film?

The message had a similar feel to Jersey Boys and the life of Frankie Valli and his struggles. But on a positive note, I observed a strong similarity between James Brown’s dance moves and performance style and Bruno Mars’ retro style.

In Bruno’s recent Honolulu concert, he impressed me with his smooth dance moves and splits, and the way he incorporated his musicians into a high-energy stage presentation. I feel that James Brown was a good musical influence on Bruno Mars, just as he was on Mick Jagger and other legendary entertainers.

To whom would you recommend this movie?

I think the baby boomers will love this movie, primarily because the music will take them back in time so they can reminisce. But I also think that new fans from many generations will learn

from this movie what a musical genius James Brown was.

Did any of the actors stand out?

Chadwick Boseman was an absolute standout as James Brown. Boseman perfectly nailed Brown’s speaking voice, and his re-creation of Brown’s dance moves was mesmerizing.

Dan Aykroyd played a very believable matter-of-fact manager. Viola Davis was convincing as Susie Brown (James’ mother) and Octavia Spencer was sassy as Aunty Honey.

Did the soundtrack contribute significantly to the film?

Yes, the songs of James Brown were a huge part of this movie. Every tune was a stepping stone in his career, and this music will forever be remembered.
