Freaky Tiki Tropical Optical, a locally-owned and operated sunglass specialty retailer, recently celebrated the opening of two new stores – in the Outrigger Reef Hotel on Kalia Road and a flagship location in Ala Moana Center (ground level near the escalators by Center Stage). The company also has stores in the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel and at Waikiki Beach Walk on Lewers Street.

The stores carry a large selection (between 800 to 1,000 styles) of sunglasses from popular brands, including luxury designers, such as Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, Dior Homme, Prada, Tiffany & Co., Tom Ford and Gucci, as well as Ray Ban, Oakley, Maui Jim and Spy Optic.

The Ala Moana flagship location has an extended selection, featuring styles from Persol, Versace, Roberto Cavalli, Oliver Peoples, Tory Burch, Coach, Carrera, Arnette and IVI.

When shopping for a new pair of sunglasses, the No. 1 thing to look for is comfort, notes Freaky Tiki general manager Ryken Shibasaki. “If they are too tight, the sunglasses may dig into your temples and cause headaches,” he says. “If they are too loose, they may consistently slide down, which can be irritating, or even fall off and possibly break. What you want to look for are styles where the widest part of the sunglass matches up with the widest part of your face.

“Also, No. 2 is style. If you look good, you feel good. There are specific shapes that compliment specific face types, but first and foremost, you should wear what you like and what makes you feel comfortable and confident.”

For those with a round face and softer features, Shibasaki suggests sunglasses that have angular features, such as square or rectangular frames. If you have a square or angular face, or a strong jaw line, he recommends sunglasses that are round or oval with softer edge lines.

As for the latest trends in sunglasses, it’s medium to large cat eye and butterfly shapes for women, as well as earth-toned frame colors and bold colors, specifically aqua and other shades of blue and green for spring. For men, it’s retro chic with simple rectangular frames or similar shapes and styles, such as the Ray Ban Wayfarer.
