Five Rotary Clubs, including West Oahu’s Pearl Harbor and Pearlridge clubs, have served as sponsors to help Habitat for Humanity Leeward Oahu build a new home for a homeless multi-generational family of 13.

Thanks to the volunteer efforts of Habitat for Humanity, the Kaneakua family’s house is already taking shape. For the past five months, volunteers have built the foundation, and just recently the house has been sealed up and the dry wall was completed.

“The structure has been built, however we’re taking over the project, because it fell short on funds,” said Jarrett Oshiro, past-president for Pearlridge Rotary Club. “This family has been waiting, so we wanted to help.”

On Aug. 4 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., more than 25 Rotarians will work to complete the finishing touches on the seven-bedroom home.

“Aug. 4 is Rotary Day, so we’re all going out there to help finish the project,” added Oshiro. “If we don’t finish we do have the option of going back again on our own to work on it.”

The completion of the home will not only mark Oahu’s largest Habitat for Humanity home, but it will also be an emotional moment for the Kaneakua family. For years they have lived at a Leeward beach, and for some of the children this will be the first time they’ve lived in a home.
