Champion golfer Ernie Els has announced that his first signature 18-hole course in Ewa Beach will be the longest on Oahu.

Els broke the news during an on-site inspection of the course last month. The 7,400-yard Hoakalei Golf Course is expected to open in 2009. It will meander across 248 acres when completed, and will be a part of the new Hoakalei Country Club located in the Ocean Pointe master-planned residential community.

The course will be the first on the island to use environmentally friendly Seadwarf seashore paspalum turfgrass, with grassing to begin in June. The warm-season seashore paspalum is salt-tolerant and requires up to 50 percent less water and 75 percent less fertilization than other types of commonly used turfgrass.
