The local Trust for Public Land office has launched a major fund-raising campaign to assist in the protection of the Turtle Bay property, currently being eyed by the state for purchase.

“We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to save this slice of the real Hawaii for today and future generations,” said Lea Hong, TPL Hawaiian Islands director and member of Gov. Linda Lingle’s Advisory Working Group on the Turtle Bay land issue. “The area is a natural treasure valued by residents and visitors alike as a rural refuge.”

Though the campaign’s website has been up for only a short time, Hong said it has already generated thousands of dollars. And a related promotion at the sold-out Kokua Festival also generated $2,000 in T-shirt sales. (The brown shirt depicts a map of the North Shore coast with the theme “$5 million for 5 miles").

“All of the funds go to land acquisition,"said Hong, a Leilehua graduate."And if the bill (SB2423) does-n’t pass, the money will still go to other land-protection projects on the North Shore.”

The working group is considering creative ways to buy 850 acres of the resort property, which is currently undeveloped.A core community group also meets weekly on the North Shore to address the issue.

The area encompasses wild coastal beaches and landscapes, surfing breaks, traditional fishing ares, threatened green sea turtle and endangered monk seal habitats, small local agricultural lots and Hawaiian ancestral burial grounds.
