Xcel, a locally founded global wetsuit brand headquartered in Haleiwa, is using its products to help in the fight against skin cancer by donating a portion of proceeds from national sales of its UV protection gear to the University of Hawaii Cancer Research Center of Hawaii.

The partnership first started in May 2007 when Xcel launched a monthlong campaign in recognition of National Skin Cancer Awareness month. Because it was so successful, the company decided to restart its partnership with CRCH in 2009 and has since raised more than $16,000. The partnership will continue through 2010.

Xcel’s primary markets include surf, dive, wakeboard, paddle and ultraviolet sun-protective apparel. Its UV protection gear features a stretch Lycra fabric that has continuously achieved the highest possible ultraviolet protection factor rating, UPF50+, meaning the fabric blocks more than 98 percent of UVA/UVB sunrays. On Oahu, Xcel is located in Haleiwa, Ward Centre and Royal Hawaiian Center. Its products also are distributed to various authorized dealers around the world.
