Marshall Lum’s 2005 Scion XB “Black Widow”
Del.icio.usIn the short time the Scion xB has been in the American market, it has become one of the most popular imports from Japan, which has led to its explosion in the custom car industry. For Marshall Lum, the Scion xB was supposed to be another form of transportation, not a second coming for the custom show car builder.
“The first car I built was a ‘79 Volkswagen Scirocco while I was in high school at Farrington,“says Lum.“It was a real rust bucket, so I fixed that up as a school project. I’ve always wanted to be a mechanic, and during that time VWs were the cars to have. So that’s how it all started for me.”
After customizing several liquid Volkswagens - one of which was a 1985 Jetta that “won every custom car show award there is"and was featured in a number of car magazines - Lum decided to step away from the car show world.
It was a difficult decision for the heavy equipment mechanic, but focusing on raising his son and buying a home were top of the list at the time.
“I got the xB so I could drive my family around and use it as a daily driver,“Lum says. “I researched the xB even before it arrived here in Hawaii and found that in Japan the xB is called the BB, and that there were a lot of after-market parts available for the xB. I bought aftermarket rims, tires and a drop kit before I bought the xB because I didn’t want to drive a stock xB. So as soon as I got home I took the car apart, and that’s when the bug bit me again and got me back into building show cars.”
Customizing the xB back in August 2004 marked Lum’s return to the world of custom show cars after a 10-year hiatus.
Recently Lum opened his own business selling Scion parts and formed the Scion Evolution Car Club Hawaii chapter, which will be helpful when he builds his 2008 Scion xB.
