Darrin & Kristy Wagatsuma’s 05 Scion xB

If a man told his wife that he was buying a fully loaded car with all of the options just so he can drive it on the weekends, you can bet that a frying pan and stitches would come into the picture real quick. Fortunately for Darrin Wagatsuma, that’s not how it happened.

“Yeah, it was supposed to be a family car,” says Wagatsuma. “But I bought this xB because it came fully loaded ,so when I told my wife how much it was, she said OK. Then about four months later I met up with the Scion club, and that’s when I started modifying the car.”

Wagatsuma has replaced almost every option the xB came with, and wishes he bought the base model instead. Today this xB is a weekend-only, during-clear-weather, dust-off-your-shoes-before-you-get-in driver. This Sunday May 25,from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wagatsuma and friends will display their rides at Aloha Tower during the fourth annual School Supply Drive.

“The school supply drive is real important,” says Wagatsuma. “My wife is a former teacher, and we would buy supplies so she could give them to her students who couldn’t afford it. Plus, when kids have their own school supplies, they’re more motivated to learn.”

Organizers are asking the attendees and show participants to donate school supplies at the free event. Prizes will be given away, including a free trip on the Hawaii Superferry.
