Reggae Fest this Friday at the Waikiki Shell

Two outstanding concerts are happening this week Friday - just take your pick.

At Waikiki Beach is the Green Aloha Concert “The Wild Hawaiian Experience” with Henry Kapono, Amy Hanaialii, Robi Kahakalau, Jasmine Trias, Kaleo Pilanca, Kenny Endo and The Kings Guard, just to name a few.

Presented by the City and County of Honolulu and Kapono, this free event hopes to raise awareness about recycling, rail transit, urban forestry, wastewater, storm water and recycling.

“This whole green movement is so important because my children and future generations need to know how valuable our future is and how valuable this earth is to our future,” says Kapono. “I believe the earth is our life source and we need to acknowledge it, embrace it and nurture it. I want mine and all our children to be the beneficiaries of this beautiful place we call home and others call paradise.”

The event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. with food, information booths and nonstop entertainment. The Blue Planet Foundation will give out 250 free CFL light bulbs and free tire gauges. Bring your HI-5 cans and bottles to help Keiki O Ka Aina raise money to develop a green space for exploration and imaginary play on its pre-school campus in Palolo Valley.

And best of all, get a listen to Kapono’s newly released DVD and CD, The Wild Hawaiian Experience. Kapono’s message of peace, love and respect is firmly embedded in his alternative pop rock arrangements. The track list includes Na Ali’i, Heeia, Taboo, Hawaii Aloha A Mau Loa, Eho Mai, Hilo Hanakahi, Na Makua, Hi’ilawe, Ke Aloha O Ka Haku (The Queen’s Prayer). And the bonus features: Ekolu Mea Nui (bonus video), The Groovement (behind-the-scenes interviews and clips), Lyrics (including English translations and meanings) and Snap Shots (photo gallery).

The Wild Hawaiian Experience is a new special edition DVD and CD, and is all about values and how we have been taught by our past to apply them to our future,” says Kapono. “It’s important. The Wild Hawaiian is my way of saying, ‘move forward with respect - live, learn and experience each and every day with passion.’”

Congrats to Indigenous and Hang 11! Both groups have moved on to the next phase of competition in the Mai Tai Rumble contest. Last week Tuesday I had the honor of judging week No. 2 of this annual music competition. Also there to take on the always-difficult task of choosing the best Open Mic and Island/Reggae band were Kevin Kaneshiro, sales and promotion manager of Vacations Hawaii, Tyler “Puunui” Wong, music director at Island 98.5 and Walter Enriques Jr., corporate director of human relations/operation and marketing of Big City Diner.

Indigenous, a seven-member band that has been together for just two months, captured the Island/Reggae category with its original tunes and energy-filled performance. Hang 11 took the Open Mic category and was my overall favorite of the evening. I love bands that truly enjoy their music and performing. Together for two years, the guys really got the crowd excited with their well-done rendition of Bell Biv Devoe‘s Poison. They tell me that they’re currently in the studio working on an album to be released early next year. Keep your ears open for that.

The weekly competition happening every Tuesday and Mai Tai Bar will continue until Dec. 1, when the last bands standing will compete for $30,000 in cash and prizes ...
