Tongan, Hawaiian and modern melodies

Waianae boy Kiwini Vaitai, a newcomer on the music scene, is the latest addition to Lost Coast Sound. His album Independently Bizarre, which released last month, has already made its way to the shelves of Borders, Walmart, Target, Best Buy and Sam’s Club.

The album blends his Tongan and Hawaiian roots, resulting in a traditional island sound. But his smooth, modern melodies are what project it beyond traditional Polynesian music.

The album features a handful other Lost Coast artists, including Siaosi, J Boog and Laga Savea, who produced the album.

Other tracks include Can’t Stop, Don’t Play, For Her, Gentle Breeze, Independently Bizarre, Lupeolo, My Love To, Pina Colada, You Left Me, Take You For A Stroll, We Party, Why Do We and You Will Be Mine.

Lost Coast Sound originated from the idea that its artists don’t fit into any one genre, but instead are a blend of everything from Hawaiian to R&B to hiphop. The production company explains that because the music is too difficult to place and too unique to name, the music industry has continued to build around artists such as theirs. Their goal is to do what no one has done before and bring the sound of their artists mainstream ...

If a jazz concert celebrating the music of Miles Davis sounds like a great way to spend a Friday night, head over to Windward Community College’s Paliku Theatre June 12 for Bop Tribal‘s Shades of Blue concert.

“We are celebrating the music of legendary musician and innovator the late Miles Davis, because this year marks his 83rd birthday and also the 50th anniversary of his most famous album, Kind of Blue, which is still the best-selling jazz album of all time,” says DeShannon Higa of Bop Tribal. “Miles is arguably the single most-influential musician in the jazz idiom, and his music has helped to shape the sound of Bop Tribal.”

The jazz quintet features Higa on trumpet and flugelhorn, Reggie Padilla on tenor saxophone, Satomi Yarimizo on piano, Jon Hawes on bass and Abe Lagrimas Jr. on drums. Bop Tribal’s core is ‘50s hard bop, but also weaves its way through modal jazz, bepop, post bop and even hip-hop.

“This will be more than a concert in that this show promises a unique visual and aural experience - so much more than a jazz set,” says Higa. “We will perform many of Miles’ classics along with some of our original material as well, including songs from our latest self-titled CD.”

Presented by Pass Out Records, the concert also will feature Hawaii’s first lady of jazz, Azure McCall, and the creative styling of inTREPiD.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $25, $15 for students and military.
