Windward Mall Hosts Care Package Drive
Windward Mall and Operation Homefront of Hawaii kicks off Operation Homefront’s holiday care package campaign with an Aloha Holiday Care Package Collection Drive from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 5. Operation Homefront hopes to receive enough donations to mail 500 care boxes to troops to help them celebrate the holidays. Local goodies such as Kona coffee, mochi crunch, macadamia nuts, crack seed, cookies, cuttlefish, University of Hawaii logo wear, Hawaii calendars, slippers as well as small holiday decorations are requested.
For those with a family member or friend overseas, Operation Homefront will accept names and APO addresses to ensure that they receive a package. The collected items will be mailed free of charge to troops overseas in time for the holidays. All donations can be dropped off at Windward Mall’s Center Court. Last year, Windward Mall’s Holiday Care Package Drive collected more than three tons of local goodies for Hawaii troops and raised more than $1,000 in cash donations.

Operation Homefront was established in 2007 to provide emergency and morale assistance to deployed troops, the families they leave behind and wounded warriors when they return home. Operation Homefront organizes an aloha care package drive twice a year (in time for Independence Day as well as for the holidays). More than 500 aloha care packages are mailed to our deployed troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait during every drive, and 1,000 boxes were sent out in the last year. In addition to the care package drive at Windward Mall, shoppers also can enjoy a lineup of family-friendly activities, including music by acoustic recording artist Kona from noon to 1 p.m., letter-writing sponsored by Fresh Inc Stationery from 1 to 3 p.m., the Star 101.9 Prize Wheel from 1 to 3 p.m., and a performance by Kevin Jones from 3 to 4 p.m.

Salvatore Ferragamo’s Royal Hawaiian flagship store in Waikiki will unveil a temporary installation of Ferragamo’s Creations, a collection of shoes and bags that resurrect in limited edition, the most celebrated and iconic designs from the company’s extensive archives of more than 13,000 original Salvatore Ferragamo designs.
The collection will be on display and available for purchase in limited-edition quantities Aug. 7 through Aug. 16, during Obon. Created in 2006 for the concept store next to the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum in Florence, which re-creates the 1950s ambience of the great designer’s showroom, Ferragamo’s Creations are now available in a small number of select boutiques (Florence, Capri, Milan, Paris, New York, Tokyo Ginza, Osaka Umeda and Beijing) and in certain concession corners (Dover Street Market in London, 10 Corso Como in Milan and Seoul and Maria Luisa in Paris).
Following a temporary installation in San Francisco, the Royal Hawaiian one marks the second time that Ferragamo’s Creations collection has travelled to other Ferragamo boutiques in the U.S.
Ferragamo’s Creations are revivals of the historical shoes and iconic handbags found in the museum in limited and numbered series. Exquisite models made entirely by hand using the original constructions, leathers and lasts, they are genuine pieces of fashion history and feature the brand’s historic label designed in 1930 by Lucio Venna.
To date, the line has re-created some of the brand’s most iconic shoes, including the F platform sandal that won Ferragamo the Neiman Marcus award, the Oscar of the fashion world, in 1947; the “Kimo” sandal inspired by traditional Japanese footwear, the black silk-velvet platform sandal made for Ava Gardner; the identical model in red suede for Eva Peron; the round toe suede ballerina shoe created for Audrey Hepburn, and the unforgettable 4-inch stiletto that gave Marilyn Monroe her legendary, sexy saunter in the film Some Like it Hot.
Ferragamo’s Creations also has brought back some of the bags that went on to symbolize the brand, including the high-design top-handle crocodile bag with the Gancino closure, and the same model in transparent Plexiglas with interchangeable fabric lining, which was inspired by the “Kimo” sandal concept.

New Details On The GIFT’s Mystery Guest
The GIFT (Giving Inspiration for Tomorrow) Foundation reports an update on the estranged Loren Ipsum, who wrote via standard mail from China to request a presence at its annual charity event, which usually takes place in October. They received the first letter last month, and last week received another note from Ipsum, but this time postmarked from Casablanca, Morocco.
Ipsum, who was mailed a confirmation letter along with an invitation and ticket by The GIFT Foundation, responded with a letter affirming receipt of the ticket and inquiries as to the dress code. “We were surprised to receive another peculiar letter with an invitation to provide a sponsor,” stated Stephanie Gambetta, co-chair of the event. “Among all of us we are not sure how to take it but are optimistic for the outcome.”
According to The GIFT Foundation, in the latest letter, Ipsum offered to have custom shirts made for the foundation’s male board members. The shirts would be from Ipsum’s favorite custom menswear boutique in Manhattan, Alexander-West. Gambetta says the theme for this year’s event is Vanity Fair, Where Old Hollywood Meets New Hollywood; and although Ipsum provides reference to New York and connections to a custom men’s clothier, there remains still no decisive evidence on whether or not there is any connection between Ipsum, Hawaii or GIFT.
For now there are only assumptions and the anticipated plan that this enigmatic jet-setter is planning to be in attendance at the event.
Each year, the GIFT board takes an active role in coordinating the “most-talked-about” annual fundraiser and selects a grantee to receive the proceeds raised from this event. For details, visit www.thegiftfoundationhawaii.org.

Mystery Guest To Attend The GIFT Foundation Event

Wednesday - June 24, 2009

Del.icio.usThe GIFT Foundation’s annual charity event, which usually takes place in October, is still in its planning stages. However, board members have revealed to MidWeek that a mystery guest has RSVP’d, even though designated invites have yet to be sent out.
According to Jonathan McManus, co-chairman of The GIFT Foundation, a distant appeal from an estranged socialite named Loren Ipsum to RSVP has been received and processed.
McManus adds that a check from a Swedish bank for an undisclosed amount was enclosed in the envelope postmarked Guilin, China. There also was a note that read: “I would like to attend your event, and upon your permission say a few words to your esteemed guests,” signed Loren Ipsum.
“I have to admit that when it was first received we were all a bit skeptical as to who this person was, how he knew about The GIFT Foundation and what his connection to our event will be,” stated McManus. “But once we took into consideration the fortitude it took to write from China asking to attend, we saw no validity in denying such a request, even if he does not show up.”
Modeled after its sister foundation in Boston, The GIFT (Giving Inspiration for Tomorrow) Foundation of Hawaii is a nonprofit organization run by young professionals who are dedicated to making a difference in the community. Its mission is to encourage young adults to participate in philanthropic giving.
Each year, the GIFT Board takes an active role in coordinating the “most talked about” annual fundraiser and selects a grantee to receive the proceeds raised from this event. Past beneficiaries include Hui Malama Learning Center, Spirit Sessions, Kanu Hawaii, the Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center and Therapeutic Horsemanship of Hawaii, Kokua Hawaii Foundation, The North Shore Community Land Trust, Ohia Productions, Positive Coaching Alliance Hawaii, MA’O Farms and College Connections Hawaii.
McManus says details on whether or not Ipsum will be allowed to speak have not yet been finalized. The board is hoping to learn more about this mystery guest before it makes its decision.

Del.icio.us
Dr. Gregory Bays Brown, noted plastic surgeon and founder of ReVive skincare, will appear in the cosmetics department at Neiman Marcus for his second Hawaii appearance Thursday, June 11, and Friday, June 12, from noon to 4 p.m.
ReVive is a technologically advanced line of skincare that uses EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor), a bio-engineered molecule whose discovery won a Nobel Prize in 1986. When applied to skin, EGF regenerates the skin and allows the cells to turn over faster, as it does in youthful skin, resulting in a vibrant, supple and dewy complexion.
Brown won the cosmetic patent for EGF in 1994 and launched ReVive skincare to the public in 1997.
During his last visit to Hawaii in April 2007, Brown introduced Peau Magnifique, a revolutionary treatment containing Telomerase - a molecule that triggers dormant stem cells to transform into brand new skin cells.
This time, Brown introduces four new body products to get your body bikini-ready, just in time for summer: Cellulite Erasure - A lightweight serum formulated with Cyclic AMP, carnitine and caffeine to reduce the appearance of cellulite-affected areas. Cyclic AMP, another technologically advanced ingredient patented by ReVive, is known to break down fat, and its discovery was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology in 1971. Carnitine energizes the skin and works synergistically with caffeine to restore a more youthful, slimmer-looking body shape. Cost is $210 for 6.7 fluid ounces.
Cleansing Body Scrub - A luxurious, dual action foaming body scrub that thoroughly cleanses and purifies. Pore-penetrating microbeads lift away dull, lifeless surface cells. It contains jojoba wax beads, Bora Bora white sand and bamboo grains, which help to refine skin tone and texture. Coconut and oat-derived cleansers provide non-drying cleansing without stripping the skin of natural oils. Olive oil and shea butter add moisturization to the skin. Cost is $85 for 6.7 fluid ounces.
Moisturizing Renewal Body Lotion - A rich lotion that helps to reverse visible signs of aging with body-specific concentration of Nobel Prize-winning, patented EGF and FGF (Fibroblast Growth Factor - a bioengineered molecule that stimulates collagen synthesis), plus a gentle touch of glycolic acid to retexturize the skin. It also protects against free radicals. Cost is $185 for 6.7 fluid ounces.
Sans Veines Body Repair Cream - A reparative body cream that stems the appearance of spider veins. Helps reverse visible signs of aging with a body-specific concentration of Nobel Prize-winning patented EGF. Other key ingredients include FGF and yeast extracts (increases elasticity which decreases the appearance of spider veins). Cost is $185 for 6.7 fluid ounces.
To reserve an appointment to see Dr. Brown during his personal appearance at Neiman Marcus, call the ReVive skincare counter at 948-7588.

Nordstrom Cosmetics Trend Show
In celebration of its one-year anniversary, Nordstrom at Ala Moana Center will host a Day of Beauty March 21 (from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.), spotlighting the newest makeup, skincare and fragrance must-haves. Industry experts will update you on the latest beauty trends and share their secrets.
Featured guests include Geir Ness, owner and creator of Laila Fragrance; Ron Robinson, owner and creator of Apothia Fragrances; Hank Hoffman, national makeup artist for Smashbox Cosmetics; Sandra Obagi, protege and daughter of Dr. Obagi and his legacy brand ZO Skin Health.
Here are some tips to making your perfume last, according to Norwegian fragrance designer Geir Ness:
* Don’t put the perfume on your wrist! This is the most exposed skin area and your wrist touches almost everything you do. Your perfume will disappear fast.
* Spray once or place a drop of perfume behind your ear, your neck where your blood is pulsating or inside your cleavage. Another good area is inside your elbow and even a drop in your hair will last.
* To give it more intensity, after you shower and put on body lotion, put some powder on the areas where you’d like your perfume and the powder will make the scent more intense and last longer.
Also, on March 28 (from noon to 3 p.m.) Nordstrom has an UGGS event showcasing its selection of UGG Australia fashion. There will be light refreshments, a DJ spinning music and informal modeling. Receive an UGG branded blanket or towel with a $140 purchase.
For more information, call 953-6100.

Honolulu-based Hawaiian Heirloom jewelry designer Philip Rickard gained celebrity status recently when his bracelets were featured in Gwen Stefani’s Spring 2008 L.A.M.B. runway show at the Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week. Stefani approached Rickard during her most recent trip to Hawaii at his Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center factory in August, while on her “The Sweet Escape” tour, and asked the jewelry designer to produce exclusive pieces for her L.A.M.B. fashion label. Stefani designed the gold pieces decorated with enameled L.A.M.B. logos that reflect the Mod theme of her Spring 2008 line.

“This project has really pushed me as a jeweler to use my experience and extend beyond what was traditionally thought of as Hawaiian pieces,” says Philip Rickard. “I am proud of what we were able to accomplish for L.A.M.B. and Gwen.”
Philip Rickard Honolulu’s pieces were also featured in Stefani’s 2005 “Luxurious” video.

Del.icio.usThis summer, Sephora at Ala Moana Center welcomes Laura Geller and Good Hair Day products to its store. Laura Geller’s makeup line, which has been a best-selling fixture on QVC, is now available at select Sephora doors and at Sephora.com. Among Laura’s best sellers is the Baked Collection of products, which are exclusively made for Laura in Italy, and are saturated with “skin glowing color to immediately enliven the skin and create a youthful aura.” Every product begins as a smooth liquid that is then infused with vibrant, skin-flattering colors. The colors are then swirled together and “baked” for 24 hours in terracotta pans to protect the integrity, rich texture and vibrancy. No two are ever identical, but each delivers breathable coverage and blendability.
Also new at Sephora is Good Hair Day (ghd), offering hair beauty products that cleanse and nourish, protect, style, and finish heat-styled hair, as well as the must-have ghd styler. The ghd styler “miraculously” detects your hair type through a sophisticated heat sensor and adjusts the iron’s temperature accordingly to deliver just the right amount of heat for your hair. The ghd styler (which retails for $240) is a styling iron that can create curls, waves, flicks, as well as the sleekest, straightest looks around.
And don’t forget to stop by the new Bare Escentuals mini boutique stationed at the entrance of Sephora. The “shop within a shop” features Bare Escentuals’ full line of products and is designed like its other retail stores. For more information, call 944-9797.
