If you’re reading this, chances are you’re a small-business owner. There are 28,000 of us statewide, employing more than 450,000 state residents.
Unfortunately, owning a small business in Hawaii doesn’t necessarily mean making a profit. Goods may be sold and services rendered, but more and more employers are finding that the cost of doing business in Hawaii can often equal their expected profits. Unless it’s a large company with a full-fledged human resource department (and there are only about 1,000 companies in Hawaii with more than 100 employees), business owners can get bogged down with selecting health care options, navigating workers’ comp coverage, and countless hours of payroll and employee-related administrative work. Sooner or later, the passion that led them to open a business is buried beneath a mountain of paperwork.
