Campbell Soccer Standout Also Excels On Football Field

For Campbell’s Bryson Maximo, his transition from soccer to football season took less than a day.

Indeed, less than 24 hours after landing back on the island after a trip with Rush 99 to a national tournament in North Carolina, Maximo was back at football practice last Thursday in the heat and humidity.

He cited “the running” as his biggest adjustment in switching sports.

“In soccer, you’re running a lot,” said Maximo, who will be a senior this fall. “In football, you stop and run, and stop and run, and you have to put on another 10 pounds (plus equipment). It takes me three weeks.”

Maximo was a First Team All-League pick in the OIA Red West last season as a soccer midfielder. On the football field, he was a place kicker and also handled kickoffs for the Sabers.

Hopes are high once again for Campbell, which went 9-4 in football last fall, and Maximo could be a huge boost on special teams, if all goes according to plan.

He recently took some time to visit with MidWeek‘s West Oahu Islander.

What is your earliest sports-related memory? My first sport was soccer. I was, like, 5 when I started, and I didn’t really know what I was doing. It was like ‘magnet ball’ — wherever the ball was, that’s where the crowd would be.

Who’s had the biggest impact on your life? My mom (Sue). She’s always encouraged me to push harder in soccer, academics and life in general.

What was your area of focus over the summer months? Soccer. We were getting ready to go to tournaments in New Mexico and North Carolina. My main focus this summer was to get noticed by the college scouts (at the tournaments).

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned through athletics? I learned to keep my grades up. It’s good to be athletic, but colleges look at grades, too. Without grades, you can’t go on to college.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I see myself playing in the MLS for the L.A. Galaxy.

What Internet site do you frequent the most? Google or YouTube.

What is your least favorite household chore? Taking out the trash.

What movie could you watch over and over? The first Goal or Goal II.

Who are three of your favorite musical artists? Eminem, Tyga and Chance The Rapper.

Do you play video games? What systems do you have and what are your favorites? I have an Xbox one and an Xbox 360. I usually play FIFA (soccer), Madden (football) and Call of Duty.

You’re stuck on Kaho’olawe and can have an endless supply of just one food. What would it be? Mexican pizza from Taco Bell.

If you could have your pick, what celebrity would you most like to meet? (Actress) Ariana Grande.
