Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues

Overall what did you think? It was terrible. I like some of Will Ferrell’s movies, including the first Anchorman, but I really had a hard time sitting through this one. The jokes were just way too random and sometimes offensive. The storyline was incredibly scattered. It almost felt like someone brought the actors together and said, “Do whatever you want.” I had no idea where they were going.

Without giving away the ending, what was one of your favorite scenes? There was one moment in the movie where I actually laughed, but it was over very quickly. Ron Burgundy (Ferrell’s character) got into a heated argument with another news anchor. They zoomed in on Burgundy’s eyes and you could see a miniature, screaming Jean-Claude Van Damme. It was incredibly random, but I liked it.

On a scale of one to four stars, what would you rate this film? ★ – and that’s being nice.

What did you think of the cinematography? There was nothing spectacular about it.

Was the message/theme clear? It does touch on an important issue in our business. At Hawaii News Now, we have lengthy conversations every day about whether or not a story is “newsworthy.” We have meetings in the morning, afternoon and evening to plan out our shows. This movie oversimplifies the process and makes dangerous generalizations. Of course, all that would’ve been forgivable if it was actually funny. But again, it wasn’t.

Did it remind you of any other works of film? I can’t think of any. But even those who love Will Ferrell and enjoyed any of his movies like Old School, Elf or Blades of Glory are going to have a tough time with this one.

To whom would you recommend this movie? Nobody.

Did any of the actors stand out? I think it’s amazing that this movie franchise has drawn so many stars to make cameo appearances. I thought I’d like Harrison Ford in this, but I liked Will Smith’s brief appearance even better.

Did you identify with any of the characters? No, but more importantly I hope no one sees any of those characters in me. Maybe you should ask our crew. Just don’t ask Grace Lee. Ha ha.

Did the soundtrack contribute significantly to the film? No.

Would you buy this movie when it comes out on DVD? No.

What’s your favorite movie snack? Popcorn and mochi crunch, and a hot dog (or two).

On a different note, what’s new with you? Things are going fantastic! Grace, Dan, Howard, Ramsay, Rachel and I are really looking forward to a great 2014. Sunrise on Hawaii News Now continues to evolve and grow. And I can’t give anything away but we have some amazing things planned for the year ahead. And we fully intend to, as Ron Burgundy would put it, “Stay classy!”

Happy New Year, Hawaii!
