An after-school math and reading enrichment program, Kumon of Kapolei-West, opened Feb. 1. Branch founder and head instructor Phillip Lieu’s goal is to help Kapolei students develop strong academic skills, as well as a love for learning and the confidence to excel beyond the classroom.

“In Kapolei, there aren’t a lot of tutoring services, so we decided this is an excellent place to help all the kids of Kapolei,” Lieu explained.

In addition to weekly classes, the center holds Family Education Nights. Open to the public, they focus on developing reading comprehension, eliminating homework hassles and preparing for the SATs.

“We have a rigorous program that is individualized, so we can cater to all types of students,” said Lieu.

Kumon of Kapolei-West is located at 1001 Kamokila Blvd., Suite 126 and is open Mondays and Thursdays, from 2 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Kumon was founded in 1958 in Japan, and uses an individualized approach designed to help children develop a solid command of math and reading skills.
